Cardinal Mooney founded as Catholic community grew | Sarasota History with Jeff LaHurd

The Catholic educational landscape changed in 1959 when Cardinal Mooney High School began accepting students. Jerry Collins, owner of the Sarasota Kennel Club devoted a Cardinal Mooney High School Night at the track as a fundraiser. Hurley chose the name Cardinal Mooney to honor the recently deceased Cardinal Edward Mooney, the beloved prelate who had served as the Archbishop of Detroit for 21 years. Cardinal Mooney would have 14 classrooms including a chemistry lab, drafting room, plus a library, offices for the staff and gymnasium with a snack bar, which also served as a lunchroom. The dynamic Father Joseph Daley who led the establishment of Cardinal Mooney High School, and served as its president, was not here to witness the momentous occasion.
